I’ve had a craving for lemon treats lately. Maybe it’s the dominance of so many other strong flavors—like chocolate, gingerbread, peppermint, and eggnog—at Christmas that has me craving the bright citrus taste of lemon. The other flavors are all good, of course, but lemon is sometimes just the flavor needed to “break up” the heavier flavors of other treats. And Linda of Free Range Cookies gives it to you with these Lemon Cake Donuts!

I love that she uses plain Greek yogurt and unsweetened applesauce in this baked donuts recipe. Those ingredients helps balance the inherent sweetness of the classic powdered sugar lemon glaze. “Time to make the donuts” will take on a whole new—and positive—meaning when the donuts you are making are these Lemon Cake Donuts!

    • Hi Arlene–Since you commented on this donut recipe, I assume you are looking for gluten-free, egg-free donut recipes. Most of the donut recipes featured here are not egg free, but this one from Gluten-Free Goddess is. Hope that helps!


    • Have you tried using a “flax egg” substitute in recipes that require eggs? I’m not egg free, but I’ve seen recipes using these. It’s made with ground flax and water (sorry, I don’t know the ratios, you can probably find that by googling it). I think I’ve seen it used on the Allergy Free Alaska gluten free website. Hope that helps!
