For my Home for the Holidays event a while back—featuring gluten-free versions of recipes that mean “home” and “holidays”—Heidi (Adventures of a Gluten-Free Mom) re-created her family’s Fritters. She told us that these fritters are also known as Forchen, Futtjeans, and Fordens, depending upon one’s heritage (and she shared a bit about hers in her post), but her beloved “Gramps” simply called them “Fritters.” Heidi said that her family’s Fritters were much like “a very dense cake-style donut hole.” The original recipe contained not only gluten and dairy, but also yeast, the latter adding that extra time needed for the dough to rise. However, Heidi converted her family’s recipe to be gluten-free, dairy-free, and yeast-free and, therefore, “sitting on your behind for 2 hours-free!” Gotta love that and these resulting Fritters!
